You don’t need to be technical to spot most of the problems that stop websites turning visitors into customers. Set aside half an hour, grab your phone, and work through this list.
1. Can you tell what you do in five seconds?
Open your homepage and look at the first screen only. Is it obvious what you do, who you do it for and where? If not, visitors may leave before they scroll.
2. Is it easy to use on a phone?
Try your site on your own phone. Can you read the text without zooming? Can you tap buttons easily? Is your phone number one tap away?
3. Does your contact form actually work?
Send yourself a test enquiry. Check it arrives, and that it doesn’t land in spam. Broken forms are surprisingly common, and silent.
4. Is the next step obvious on every page?
Every important page should make it clear what to do next: call, request a quote, book a visit. If people have to hunt for your contact page, some won’t bother.
5. How fast does it load?
Open your site on mobile data rather than Wi-Fi. If you’re waiting, so are your customers. Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool will also show you what’s slowing it down.
6. Is the information up to date?
Old prices, staff who have left, services you no longer offer or a copyright year from years ago all quietly erode trust.
7. Do you show proof?
Reviews, photos of real work, case studies and accreditations reassure people you’re the real deal. Make sure they’re easy to find, not buried on one page.
8. Do you have a page for each main service?
One page listing everything you do makes it hard to rank for any of it. A dedicated page for each important service helps customers and Google alike.
9. Can Google find you for your own services?
Search for your main service and your town, without your business name. If you don’t appear on the first page, customers searching that way won’t find you.
10. Do you know what your website brings in?
If you can’t say roughly how many enquiries your website produces each month, you can’t tell whether changes help. Simple tracking fixes this.
